Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall

The San Francisco Bay Area Celtic Music and Dance Festival is happening this Saturday, February 21st at the Oakland Veterans Hall 200 Grand Avenue Oakland, 94610, X Harrison.

BayCeltic is an annual reunion of Bay Area Celtic musicians, singers, dancers and performers.

We have a wide range of very popular and well established musicians and performers.

The Black Brothers, Tempest, Molly's Revenge, Cullan's Hounds,Avalon Rising, Steve Baughman,and Siamsa, a bay area Celtic dance performance group, are in the main Ballroom.

In the musical showcase, new and emerging bands and musicians are are Three Mile Stone, Jim Nelson,Patrice Haan,Megan McLaughlin,Valerie Rose,West of Shannon,Susan Mashiyama and Lani Herrmann.

Steve Baughman will perform and lead the music session afterwards.

Berkeley Thai Temple to Ask ZAB to Allow Year-Round Sunday Brunch

Wat Mongkolratanaram will be back Thursday at the Berkeley Zoning Adjustments Board meeting to request a use permit modification which will allow the 33-year old Buddhist temple to serve its disputed yet exceedingly popular Sunday brunch throughout the year.

The current permit, issued in 1993, limits the temple at 1911 Russell St. to serving food only three times annually.

When the temple’s volunteers approached the zoning board in April for a permit to build a new Buddha shrine, a group of neighbors complained that the Thai Temple was running a commercial restaurant business in the guise of serving meals to its followers, bringing trash and congestion to the area.

The monks at the temple responded that the Sunday brunch ritual was a centuries-old Thai tradition, in return for which they often asked for donations.

After investigating the allegations, zoning officials announced in June that the Berkeley Thai Temple had repeatedly exceeded the number of events allowed by its use permit.

Although no one was able to ascertain just how long the temple had been violating its permit, the board agreed to give the temple a chance to modify the original permit and address neighborhood concerns.

Board members also suggested mediation, the most recent of which was held on Aug. 6.

Thai Temple volunteers and Oregon, Ward Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way residents met with Victor Herbert of East Bay Community Mediation three times since June, following which they came to an agreement only about the entrance to the new sanctuary.

No common ground was achieved over the frequency of the brunches or the crowds they attracted, Herbert said.

The temple has addressed concerns of some neighbors about the early morning cooking by starting at 8 a.m. It has also cut down on the brunch hours, starting now at 10 a.m. instead of 9:30 a.m. and closing the food stalls an hour earlier than before, at 1 p.m.

“It was the best kept secret in town, or maybe the worst kept secret,” Herbert said of the Thai Temple’s Sunday festivities. “This is a situation that affects a large number of neighbors, some of whom enjoy the availability of food, and some of whom oppose it, and some of whom may be indifferent. Ours was an attempt to see if there were grounds for mutual accommodation.”

Among the list of 19 neighbors who signed a petition demanding that the zoning board shut down the Sunday brunch was Tom Rough, whose house abuts the temple boundaries.

In an e-mail to project planner Greg Powell, Rough quoted from recent reviews of Wat Mongkolratanaram’s weekend brunch on yelp.com, which described “ridiculously long lines” and “super packed” tables on Sundays, to argue that the temple’s efforts to scale down its operations had been ineffective.

“The neighbors have complained,” Rough wrote. “They have put forth a good faith in mediation. With the temple’s failure to change their food service sufficiently to satisfy our complaint, the city has a responsibility to act.”

On a recent Sunday afternoon, more than 50 people were turned away because the temple ran out of pad Thai and mango sticky rice almost an hour before the monks declared brunch officially over.

The remaining 200 who got to stay squeezed into every nook and cranny possible inside the temple, at times spilling over into the adjacent South Berkeley Library lawns to feast on what some described as “the best Thai food ever.”

“It would be a shame if it shut down,” said Cindy Hann, who has been coming to the Thai Temple for the past two years from Moraga. “I think the temple is really trying to be a good neighbor.”

Thai grandmothers in faded gray aprons ladled out soup and red curry chicken to Cindy’s daughter Ellen and then helped 10 other people in less than five minutes.

In the next canopy, Thai youngsters performed a Thai folk dance in pink and purple sarees, their parents bustling around to applaud their performance.

Sakchai Himathongkham, a volunteer at the Thai Temple, said there was no way of telling how many people turned up at the temple every Sunday.

The donations from the brunch sponsored teachers from Thailand who came to the United States to teach Thai and also subsidized tuition for locals who came to learn Thai at the temple school, he said.

“The cost of airfare alone from Thailand to the U.S. is $1,5OO,” he said. “Then there’s cost of living on top of that.”

Siwaraya Rochanahusdin, who teaches intermediate and advanced Thai to children and adults at the temple, said a large number of Thai Americans from the East Bay sent their children to the temple school to learn Thai and traditional music and dance.

“The older generation of Thais who settled in America long ago want their grandchildren to be culturally sensitive,” she said. “They want to speak to them in Thai. We all want this issue to be resolved as quickly as possible. We don’t see it as the neighbors versus the temple. We are all part of the community together.”

Himathongkham described the Temple as a place for people from different walks of life to come together over food.

“It’s like the Berkeley Bowl or the Saturday Flea Market,” he said. “I think of this as a good opportunity for the city to look at the conditions of an urban neighborhood. To look at how we can come together and work on traffic flow and improving dialogues with each other. There’s a lot of misunderstanding since we speak a different language and come from a different culture. But we are working together to make things OK.”

Helge Osterhold, a neighbor, lined up at one of the stalls to exchange dollar bills for red and green tokens, the preferred form of currency at the temple.

“Most people love the Thai temple,” he said. “It’s a place of integration. I come here every other week and just love it. It brings stability to our neighborhood. Just a few blocks down there’s gangs and drug dealers hanging about. I think some neighbors are just blowing this out of proportion.”

here is original story:
so last night i was biking between two houses on my way to the wonderful world of sleep when some folks thought it would be an entertaining idea to try and run me over with their fancy black sedan. so here i am riding down peralta pretty fast when i hear bass and see them sitting there then i hear a screech from their car and they shoot at me in a t-bone fashion. i swerve out of the way and stop my forward momentum with my backwards face and hand. they come to an almost stop within feet of me and jet off while i am spitting out chunks of my teeth. i start to get up when i notice my finger is crooked at a 30 degree angle and twisted, in the middle and i can't really move my mouth as it is already swollen up (and still is). i get my stuff together and get of the bike adding my bloodshed to the street that has seen so much in it's life to nyssa's and start banging on the door for someone to please be home. at this point i know i'm fucked. i am not going to be able to eat very well anymore right now. and the pain is quite a nuisance, like having little nanobots with jackhammers going to town on my head. and i get a ride to the hospital (thanks ten (10) and melanie!)
now...
i am getting my finger pinned back together tomorrow and am working on borrowing alot more money than i am comfortable with at the moment. what i need to ask is if anyone know a dentist preferably in the eastbay they can refer me too. i dont know how much i can pay but i can do payment plans and have a secure job.
i think i may try and have a benefit also.......and no you can't have my tooth fragments.

Shusei Yamada, a photojournalist from Japan, has embarked on a “Biodiesel Adventure” that will take him, along with two other drivers, around the world in a car that will run on biodiesel fuel made from cooking oil.
Their plan is to have the specially outfitted car fueled with (used) cooking oil -- collected from friends and those who can contribute, in any way, to their venture. Their goal is to meet individuals, progressive thinkers and
activists along their route, who are conscious of the global warming crisis and who are interested a more sustainable lifestyle.

Yamada and his team seek to experience connecting with people, cultures, the remaining beauty of the world, and to test the potential of biofuel as a viable alternative to fossil fuel.

In February, 2008 the car was shipped from Japan to Vancouver, Canada, where they will begin the journey heading to Seattle, Washington, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, etc. The plan is to end the North America phase of the trip by early April in Baltimore, MD, where the car will be shipped to Europe or Africa.

As a photojournalist, Yamada plans to document the process and journey on the website: www.biodieseladventure.com.

I'd like to invite y'all to an event I've been working on for nearly a year. I conceived of it, pitched it to the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden and they liked it so we've worked together on it. What is it?

Even folks who already belong to one society may find they have an interest in another society. I have a spot reserved in the How Berkeley Can you BE? parade~ and I would like to perform along side a group that allready has worked together. Perhaps, at least 3 or 4 other people. I just want to have fun and I can work around your act.

This is to perform and parade this Sunday Sept. the 30th. I would really like to perform and I allready have some Puppets and masks created and ready to go. another option is, if you have allready signed up for the "how berkeley" parade, I can cancel my registration if I have to and join you.

I have paraded in alot of protests... at Burning Man, and with Bread and Puppet theater in Vermont, (through and internship) and more...
I am a percussionist / puppeteer / performer/visual artist who is working more clowning and dancing into my performances.

The 23rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day is
Saturday, September 15th, 2007
9 AM to Noon

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. On this day, 50,000 volunteers turn out to over 700 cleanup sites statewide to conduct what has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 750,000 Californians have removed more than 12 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by The Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year.

Coastal Cleanup Day is the highlight of the California Coastal Commission's year 'round Adopt-A-Beach program and takes place every year on the third Saturday of September, from 9 a.m. to Noon. In 2007, that day falls on September 15. Coming at the end of the summer beach season and right near the start of the school year, Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun! Coastal Cleanup Day is also the kick-off event for Coastweeks—three weeks of coastal and water-related events for the whole family.

----LAST WEEK: Christian Drake and Stephen Meads hosted the Open Slam. We had a healthy mix of newbies and veterans, with a full house, though not packed like last week! Despite a strong sacrificial poems, "Let's Get Freaky", by Team Oakland's N'er City, the energy and scores stayed low until Mark States warmed things up and Kristina kicked up the Scores halfway through the slam. Jason Bayani took top marks for "Love Song In The Key Of Gunpowder".

---Oakland's Queen D and Clarity featured as a duet called "Clearly Queens" and showed us the skills that have made them two of the 'must see' poets in the burgeoning Oakland scene.

---Round 2: Dan's anthem "Stand Up" took him to 6th. Meddle described living in the wilderness to finish 5th. "Moderation Junkie" Matt finished a very solid 4th. Ekabhumi's playful "Poem For A New You Know Who" took him to 3rd. Kristina's soft-spoken but well-written work took her to 2nd . Winning it by THREE POINTS (and winning the $100 for the first time in a year) was Jason Bayani with "Heart Of a Fighter".

Does your alter ego need a makeover? Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven’t been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

If you’d like to:
volunteer for the event
bring your sewing machine to the event for others to use
help run a transformation station
lead a workshop on modifying clothing
or provide an activity for children

first show was january 27 2004@ Van Kleef's in Oakland.
It was quite a production inluding the queen's concert,
tea party trio, suitcase puppet show of walrus & carpenter
and the jabberwock monstermasks. twas a mad evening
of fun.
the next was a one man show for an intimate audience
of close friends.
it's third year running was the mad tea party with a book
& c.d. to accompany.
the 4th year is set to be in co-operation with
the lucid dream lounge.
this is the culmination of a lifetimes connection to
the writings of Lewis Caroll,
here was my original Idea :I'ts a glam rock opera,
Spacey sci-fi, I like ziggy style, and kabuki japanese
cats, bunraku, noh theatre. this is a description of
a young lewis caroll, in some fanciful asian opium den,
being served and having the hallucination that he
watered down to create alice's adventures in
wonderland. focusing on the bestiary of "Jabberwok"
, the white rabbit, the tea party, and a god-like
presence of the cheshire (cat).
seeking performers, puppet craft, and hosts for
this would bee epic of psychedelic performance art.
follow thee white rabbit...
the set so far
red queen (an original)
white rabbit(+new verses)
the walrus & the carpenter (to music)
I am the walrus (mutant version)
the humpty dump (mix of humpty dance with parts
of eggman & the original poem)
jabberwocky(grunge version)

the inverse set also features some surprizes from
the collective of songwriters (the likes of the hobo gobbelins,
sourmash hug band & accordion plague)

AT THE START OF THE SHOW:
white rabbit makes an appearance & then takes us
"through the rabbit hole". when we hit the bottom
a red queen appears: I'm bored to tears with the likes
of you! I declare that there shall be a concert to
amuse me & my royal court."
at this point a page begins calling forth the appointed
acts,
***still looking for quick cabaret style performances
(2-3 songs) which can work with a wonderland style

when it comes time for the hatter to sing,
he does so off key & tempo, so badly that the
queen shouts: "stop him! he's murdering time!!!"
and a guard roughly ejects the hatter from the "stage".
perhaps a bit of mumbling as the court complains
of the hatter's ruination of the concert.
focus shifts to the tea party set.
mad hatter: Oh bugger! they've broken my watch!
march hare: let me see that watch hatter.
(smears it with a thick layer of butter)
that should do the trick.
hatter: (shakes watch & listens) nope, it's still broken
now, we'll be stuck in tea time forever.
dormouse: play us a song hatter, to help us pass the time
hatter plays white rabbit....
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

at this point a mock turtle comes in with
a taureen of hot green soup, followed by a
gryphon.
hatter: I say there, mock turtle what's that
you've got?
mock: it is a most beautiful soup! try some
(ladles some into tiny cups passing some to the party)
hatter:delicious!
as the band strikes up the beautiful soup song
the soup service continues.

A room in a unique warehouse space is available (artist/event/creative) 600$

A medium sized room in a 1300 sq ft warehouse in oakland available in February.

The room is 600$ with first and last month to be paid upon moving.. Deposit is only 200$! And the lease is Month to Month!! There will be one other occupant, a 32 yr old professional male with a 9-5 who is also a Gothic industrial veteran DJ of the bay area.

The space is unique and a perfect space for an artist. This unit is in a large industrial building with secure underground parking. washer and dryer is available in the building. Two storage closets, 2 bathrooms and a full kitchen are available. Also, a HUGE living room area, big enough for a dancefloor and ceilings that are 15 ft tall! There is rooftop access as well. This is not your ordinary living situation. Its great for artists, creative types that are into unorthodox living situations. Hell, theres a swing in your own living room! If you are creative and love to customize or paint your room to whatever color you want, then this place is perfect for you. We are NOT looking for HARDCORE druggies/partiers. Someone that is respectable, cleanish, and financially responsible is preffered. Your room is about 12x12 with 15 ft ceilings. Basically this could be two room if you are handy and make a loft. The common space is HUGE though the only other occupant in there is rarely there, sleeping there only a couple times a week and gone during working hours.

The enormous common area has been painted and decorated in a fashion to allow small events. For now, it has a full bar, sound and light system.However, it is still to be determined how much of these things will remain after the current occupant moves out. For the most part, this is a living space with the large room open, perfect for working on projects. When its not being used though, it should be kept tidy.

The building houses many units that are competely seperate from each other. You dont have to see or interact with anyone there if you dont want to, but other residents include artists f all types, other production groups that throw random events here and there, record labels, and some regulars that just live there.

A ska experience! Drawing upon diverse experiences in 1960's era Jamaican music, funk, soul, and jazz, The Soul Captives fuse together a unique musical style that they simply refer to as "the captivating sound". Varying from blazing horn-driven Skatalites style instrumentals to smoking vocal tunes with full harmonies reminiscent of Bob Marley and the Wailers, they have yet to play for a crowd that could stay in their seats.

The band began as a hobby for guitarist Vic Wong and trumpeter Josh Jerge in the summer of ‘03. Already veterans in the ska scene from Bay Area Music Award winners Monkey and Riverside soul-reggae combo the Debonaires, the two hoped to start a group that combined their two loves: jazz and Jamaican music. They had their eyes on Raynier Jacildo to man the keyboard, another talented young performer with Sacramento's reggae sensations, the Steady Ups. They also recruited local roots reggae session players Mark Allen-Piccolo (bass) and Jayme Arredondo (drums). Having backed reggae legends like Sister Nancy, Don Carlos, and Wadi Gad, the pair brings a wealth of experience and authenticity in Jamaican rhythms. To lead the group, the Captives employed the silky-smooth voices of Glenn Casuga (who doubles on tenor saxophone) and Lauren Nagel-Werd. Learn to cook Thai food in East Bay?

I just got back from Thailand and I noticed that a huge thing over there, especially in Chiang Mai is Thai cooking schools. I have never seen that over here in the states but I think it would be a pretty big hit. Well I picked up a lot of recipes over there and I just wanted to gauge people's interest.

Remembering Ruthie's Inn Spotlights Punk Rock History With Huge Reunion Show
Ruthie's Inn was a small club on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, California that was instrumental in not only supporting the East Bay punk scene, but also in helping spawn a thriving thrash/metal scene from 1983 - 1987. Ruthies was a brilliant, if short lived, club whose place is firmly established in the annals of punk and metal history. Wes Robinson, an infamous and visionary promoter, was responsible for providing this venerable niteclub to the second wave of punk bands ranging from The Bad Brains, The Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Flipper, MDC and DOA to Code of Honor, Verbal Abuse, Fang, Anti-Momb, Special Forces, DRI and many others, establishing them firmly into the history of hardcore. Later on, this eventually segued into a weekly ritual that showcased such seminal thrash/metal bands as Metallica, Slayer, and Exodus.

Wes, now in his 70’s, is working on a documentary film called “Remembering Ruthie’s Inn”. A reunion show is slated for September 23rd, 2006 at NIMBY in Oakland and will include many of the legendary bands who supported this club. The reunion will be filmed and will include Interviews for the upcoming documentary, as well as a tattoo art show, photos, a half pipe, a vintage flier gallery, and display boards showcasing Ruthie’s Inn history.

Fans of The Daily Show—mark your calendars for Friday, September 1, when Cal Shakes will host a special reception for Daily Show Correspondent Dan Bakkedahl at 6:30pm before the 8:00pm performance of The Merchant of Venice. Bakkedahl, who studied theater in college alongside Cal Shakes Associate Artistic Director Sean Daniels, is on the Theater’s Advisory Council, and is working to help introduce new patrons and donors to Cal Shakes as part of the New Generations program. New Generations efforts include our “Young & Cheap” discount tickets for people age 30 and under; our Ambassador program, which recruits and empowers college students and young professionals to help spread the word about Cal Shakes; and upgrades to our website, including message boards, artist blogs, and podcasts.

Last month, an e-mail message from Bakkedahl was sent to Cal Shakes’ “Whippersnappers” (patrons who had previously purchased “Young & Cheap” tickets) to inform them of a unique challenge. This is a reminder about the Community Planning meeting to be held this
Thursday evening as part of the process sponsored by Councilmember Jane
Brunner to establish neighborhood planning guidelines for future development
projects in Temescal and along Telegraph Ave., from 40th St. to the Berkeley
border.

Thursday's meeting will be the second of two panel discussions bringing in
experts to discuss key aspects relating to development in our neighborhood.
Thursday's panel, "Temescal Buildings and Community Character," will include
the topics of: historic fabric, the economics of development, and business
retention.

Take a tumble down the rabbit hole into an otherworldly carnival of fire. The night comes alive with lightning from Tesla coils and eruptions of fire. The circus was never like this, with performances from Mark Bamuthi, Prescott Circus, Vatra, Loco Bloco, Ultra Gypsy, Copper Lantern, El Circo, Von Stilt Family, XENO, DJ Vordo, Yard Dogs Road Show, and an eclectic collection of fiery circus performers.

After you get over the bridge take I-580 E / CA-24 / DOWNTOWN OAKLAND / HAYWARD-STOCKTON
When the different highways start branching off take the downtown 880 one and get off at your first exit which will be 27th street/ west grand ave. Go strait (you'll be riding underneath the freeway) until you get to west grand ave. Then make a right. Go stait for aprox. 10 blocks to adeline st. then make a right and go up to 28th street. All the streets are even numbered. take a left on 28th street and end a block over at magnolia. My place is a peach building with cracks in it. It's easier than I probably make it sound but these are correct directions.

If taking bart you take pitsburg bay point or Richmond train to Macauthur bart station. When you exit the station you'll be on 40th street. Walk 4 blocks west on 40th street to Market street and catch the ..88 bus going south to 28th st. and adeline. When on 28th street go one block west to magnolia.

If on a bike then it's easier. Get off at west Oakland bart (which is on 7th street) and ride up to 28th street then go east 4 blocks to magnolia

Roy Zimmerman's evening of satirical songs might be more at home in a nightclub or campus quad than a theater, and mocking the right wing is obviously preaching to the choir in Berkeley, but Zimmerman does so with such charm and devilish wit that none of those caveats matter much. He takes on the PATRIOT Act, intelligent design, anti-gay-marriage hysteria, the War on Terror, English-only reactionaries, Dick Cheney, and Ann Coulter with his acoustic guitar, brief segueing patter, clever rhymes, and pliant meter. Particularly hilarious are an Elvis-like love song to the National Security Agency ("because you really listen"), a portrayal of "Jerry Falwell's God" as a tedious party-crasher, and a sultry falsetto ode to abstinence. Laurel Summer Solstice Music Festival - June 24th

LAUREL SUMMER SOLSTICE MUSIC FESTIVAL TO BE HELD JUNE 24TH

Oakland’s Laurel neighborhood will become a virtual stage on Saturday, June 24, 2006, when over 55 musical groups will provide free entertainment to celebrate the Summer Solstice. From 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. musicians will be performing in resident driveways, in parking lots along MacArthur Boulevard and in select restaurants and coffee shops. The event is being presented by the Laurel Village Association, a nonprofit organization promoting community development in Oakland’s Laurel neighborhood.

The festival will take the shape of a musical walking tour where participants are encouraged to visit over 18 sites which will feature musicians playing jazz, classical, blues, country, folk, rock, funk, reggae, calypso, western swing, punk and R&B. It will also include traditional and contemporary music from Armenia, France, China, Ethiopia, Japan, Brazil, Korea, Haiti, and India." The Walking Tour begins alongside the Laurel Lounge at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and 38th Avenue.
